What theatrical things have you been doing this summer?  Tell us below:

Hey all! -

I just got back from a week of NIU Theatre Camp!  It was a great experience!  Every day we had Improv class, acting class, lunch, a workshop of our choice, production rehersals, and evening activities. I took 4 different workshops, one on each weekday. I took Monolouges, Musical Theatre Voice Techniques, Movement, and Directing. These workshops were taught by professors, students, and alumni of NIU's MFA program. They were so informative and I can't wait to share with you what I  learned!! There were 5 different productions available for us to audition for. Each of them was put on in a Classical Greek rendition. The productions were Alice in Athens (a retelling of Alice in Wonderland), The Furies, Medea, The Twin Menechmas, and the musical was Aida. I auditioned for Aida and Alice in Athens. I made Aida, got a callback for Aida, but ended up getting the role of Nehebka. We had to cut the show down, so the only characters we casted were Aida, Nehebka, Amneris, Radames, and Mereb. We sang Dance of the Robe, How I Know You, and Fortune Favors The Brave. It was such a great experience!  I learned so much and met so many awesome people!  If you get a chance to go to a theatre camp, GO!!

Hey guys I have been really busy over the summer.  I have been taking voice and acting lessons, which have been so fun!!!  I was in the Guys and Dolls production  for Northwest Music Academy, and met so many new theatre friends.  Didn't get to do any theatre camps ( which was a big disappointment), but i did get to do two dance shows AND THAT WAS AWESOME!  Not forgetting seeing some shows across the area like Joseph, West Side Story and the professional chicago production of Fiddler on the Roof with Topol.  Lately I  am learning to play the African drum callled the djembe and getting ready for the next C.A.S.T. production of Peter Pan.  Im back  in training to make an audition tape for Cirque du Soleil. - Mo

I doubt its much of a suprise to anyone, but i havent been up to much over the summer. But, all last week i was in Colorado on a hiking trip. We left really early Saturday morning and drove all day and all day Sunday. On Monday we went white water rafting on the Arkansas River all day, there were alot of class 4 and 5's (the really challenging ones). We went right under the Royal Gorge Bridge, at 1,053 ft is the highest suspension bridge in the world and also a prototype of the Golden Gate. The next day we did a small hike to some pretty cool water falls but because of the rain and marble sized hail it wasnt too fun. Wednesday we hiked up to Twin Sisters Peak and reached the summit at 11,400 ft. Thursday was spent around Estes Park, bought some gifts and some other stuffs. Friday was the big day, we hiked up Longs Peak. Longs Peak is one of the 54 "fourteeners" in the Rocky Mountains (meaning higher than 14,000 ft above sea level). But sadly, we were not able to summit, we were only able to reached the boulder field, a .3-ish mile field of boulders ranging from the size of your fist to the size of a house. There was only about a mile left till the summit but the next part included hiking on a very narrow edge and hanging on to the cliff side as you walk, and with the 60 mph winds, we decided not to attempt it. The next two days were spent on the ride home, and that is why i missed the picnic. I met alot of new people and made many new friends, who surprisingly live relatively close. - Mike W.

Summer is almost over, and I can't wait for the new theatre season! This summer, a lot of thespians and I were in We the People for Summer With the Arts. It was pretty tough as it got closer to opening night, but we pulled it together and it was a great show! After the shows ended, a few of us got together and decided to enter the McHenry County Fair Talent Show. Our group consisted of Nora, Jake, and I, as well as two future theatre geeks, Sarah S. and Missy B [both freshmen]. Our act consisted of singing and dancing to Taylor Swift's Love Story. We got to the semi-finals, and soon realized that we were the youngest contestants by far, since the majority of people were in college. Nevertheless, we did our best and were chosen to be one of 8 finalists to perform at the fair! The finals came around, and we put all of our effort into the performance. We didn't place, but we had a lot of fun and it was a great learning experience. Now it's time to bring in another great theatre season! See you all at rehearsals! -Becky

January 8 - 10 we were at the Illinois State Theatre Festival

Here is a summary of the event from Mrs. Steffan, Director of Theatre:

The 26 students who attended the Theatre Festival along with 3,970 other Illinois theatre students were able to attend their choice of 12 different plays and over 50 different workshops over 3 days time.  They also viewed the all-state production of the Broadway musical, Hairspray.  150 high schools participate in this annual event that is in its 34th year.  I am privileged to attend with our students and thankful to the community for your support of the theatre arts program at MCHS.
Three students, Mary "Bo" B, Ruth K and Missy L, attended the college auditions held at the Illinois Theatre Festival on Friday.  These three students combined RECEIVED 39 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS in theatre arts.  The Illinois Theatre Festival college auditions are for seniors only.  The auditionees submit resumes and registration information to the audition board and are then selected to participate in the auditions based on several criteria; instructor approval, thespian membership, high school theatre experience, etc.  The auditions are held in front of the directors or instructors of theatre from 40 different colleges all at once.  Students have a time limit of 2 minutes only to deliver one monologue and one song - prepared and memorized.  These auditions are very intimidating and mimic a professional theatre audition.  The colleges then issue "call backs" to the students to whom they will offer scholarships and students then visit them at the Festival.  Although some students walk away receiving no call backs, our three top seniors who auditioned performed well, receiving 39 call backs which all represent some scholarship offer ranging anywhere from $1,000 to 1/2 tuition.
Now these colleges are asking "Where's Marengo?"  I spent a good deal of time this weekend talking to the college reps and they are delighted with the caliber of our theatre students.  This is not like a college fair where reps from the admissions office attend.  These are the actual Directors of Theatre or Chairmen of the Department of Theatre, or their representatives, from top schools.  Some of the scholarships our students were offered were from DePaul University, Millikin University, SIU, NIU, WIU, Illinois Wesleyan University,  St. Louis University, Ball State University, Cardinal Stritch University, Bradley University and others.  It looks like Marengo is finally on the theatre world map.
